Since I was a little girl, my curiosity and adventurous spirit has been the compass that guides my life. I’m always investigating and exploring. Sometimes this gets me into trouble, but most times I discover something wonderful about the world around me or some deeper part of myself I never knew existed. Indie games and books that fill my heart with a sense of wonder and understanding. A failed marriage unearthing a strength in me I never knew was there. Wisdom collected from an animated tv show or watching nature do its thing outside. There are endless opportunities to learn and grow, if only we step outside of our normal way of doing things.

This blog isn’t all about roses and unicorns. It’s about collecting experiences, no matter how beautiful or ugly they may be, and shaping them into something worthwhile. It’s about truth and open-mindedness. The world can be a shitty place, but there are things we can do in and of ourselves to be better and therefore make it better for others.

Kathryn "Ryn" De Shields

I was the kind of kid, teenager and adult that never quite fit in. I was too nerdy to be popular. Too sociable to be a proper nerd. Too "white" to be black, and too "black" to be white. Too much of a dreamer to be practical. Too much of a control freak to follow my dreams.

Somehow, I found a way to corner both ends of any spectrum which left a lot of people (nevermind myself) very confused. At some point, I started lobbing off key parts of myself to fit in -- a social chameleon of sorts. I wouldn’t mention my faith in some circles, would avoid anything considered geeky in others, and would slide into being an airhead girly-girl if the occasion called for it (by far, the toughest niche to occupy.) Though I was well liked, I felt lost and utterly alone in the crowd because no one truly knew me in my entirety. It would be easy to blame them for accepting the toned-down, 2D version of me with no questions asked. The truth? I was to blame for putting the validation of others before being who I really am.

It took years for me to adapt to a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) lifestyle where I don’t hide any parts of who I am or try to justify the wide swatches of color in my personality. Learning this has enriched my life beyond measure, and I know adopting a WYSIWYG lifestyle will do the same for you, too. Explore the dreams you think are impossible. Allow curiosity to take over and lead you to distant shores. Live. Laugh. Love. This blog is the product of all the lessons and things I collected in the journey to love myself and be confident enough to know that others out there will love me for who I am, too.

Explore every nook and cranny that exists in you, and delight in it. Discovering yourself is a wonderful journey, and it is merely the beginning.
